CHARLOTTE, N.C. – George Phillips’ dream season on Carolina race tracks continues. The 14-year-old scored his second straight legend car semi-pro division win in the 30th Annual Cook Out Summer Shootout Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Tuesday, which was his fourth overall victory in the first nine races. He has also won three times in a pro late model, running with the Carolina Pro Late Model Series. He charged from the rear of the field to finish fifth in that series’ most recent race at Tri-County Speedway on Saturday.
Asked after last Tuesday’s legend car win if the car was handling as good as it looked, his eyes lit up and he said, “Yes! Everybody on this Miller Performance Motorsports team just keeps working hard to give me great cars, and that’s why I can go get wins like we did tonight. Thank you to the Lord, first off, and to my team and all of my sponsors for supporting me.”
Phillips had to battle with a strong running Canadian competitor Parker Traves from Gravenhurst, Ontario to get the win this week, as Traves had his No. 60 dialed in for the feature event and tested Phillips in his No. 55 early in the race, leading until Phillips took it away and gained some distance over the rest of the field. Late in the race, Jesse Martinez in the No. 5x, a stout runner from Florida, took over second but was not able to challenge for the win.
The final event for the Shootout at Charlotte is next Tuesday, August 4. It is Championship Night, with a full slate of racing action and then a huge post-race with awards presentations, an autograph session on the main straightaway, and a fireworks display to cap off what has been a very exciting two months of racing at one of NASCAR’s most beloved tracks.
Phillips can win the championship for the semi-pro division in that last race on Tuesday at Charlotte. He also has a 101-point lead with five races left in the Carolina Pro Late Model Series, having scored three wins so far this season on that tour driving for Setzer Racing and Development.
